A buddy of mine has a LTD crown victoria that was suffering from a pretty nasty oil leak. Well no longer! Replaced the valve cover and intake manifold gaskets, also decided to use up some Ford blue paint I have had lying around for a long time while I had all the parts off. As I’ve mentioned before, I can’t stand working on a dirty engine. I tried to clean anything i ran across, though it needs a thorough pressure washing still. I’m sure she’ll be back soon enough.
Found a piece of bone from the deer that messed up the front end, how joyful.
Runs fantastic now, though I have put together a few thoughts on the car.
*The fan is huge and heavy. Sure it’s a big v8 but that thing’s gotta sap some significant power.
*I know it’s not the HO but jesus it has a tiny throttle body. Far smaller than my M30 (3.5 i6).
*also tiny passages for the intake manifold. Even though there’s 8 instead of 6 the M30 displaces more air.
*150 hp out of a 5 liter v8 made in ‘91 is very meh, especially when compared to the 180 from the 3.5 i6 in ‘85, or compared to ~300 out of my Jags 4.0 v8 which to be fair is ‘98. Also quite a bit down on torque compared to the 4.0.
*Holy exposed fasteners batman
And a before/after.

Nice job, looks so much better washed up and painted.

Looks worlds better. An HO cam out of a Mustang and a GT40 intake off an Explorer would really wake it up a bit.

Nice job!
Before I scrolled down my first thought was “oh no, he’s painted that intake ford blue!”

Ooh! Really gave it a nice touch with the intake and valve cover job.

Very nice cleanup. Much improved!
And yeah, the 5.0’s were choked-down in every area. Its amazing the difference that a good intake, TB, and some headers make even without having to crack open the engine.

Yeah that’s what I seem to find, which does make sense, it shouldnt take that much to make power out of a relatively large engine. Also, thanks!

Thanks! I was hoping people would chime in with ways to improve the 5.0, I’ll have to run them by my friend once the front end damage is repaired.

If he wanted to go full-junkyard, you can get GT40 heads (usually GT40P) off an Explorer as well. On an HO 5.0, the heads and intake should be good for something like 70hp. Add an HO cam and he’d probably be in the neighborhood of 300hp.
I’ve got an ‘86 Mustang that's waiting on a GT40 head/intake swap this winter. Intake cost me $50 from the junkyard, heads I got for $150. Can't really beat 70hp for $200.

Haha! Expecting this?
I try to keep it tasteful, though I wouldn’t leave the valve covers on this engine flat black, they’d be filthy again in no time. You can see more than a few smudges just from installation of the manifold.

Nice! Junkyard builds are the best builds if you ask me. I imagine if this car had more power the mileage would improve as it feels like barely enough to move the car, especially up hills.

It couldn't get much worse, haha. You're having to work the shit out of that car to get it to do anything.
